the strokes--i like angles all right. their earlier stuff is growing on me. but casablancas sounds a bit too much like lou reed on their first album
alela--agreed. i came across her in an issue of spin (ASIDE!!! so i subscribed to spin after tiring of rolling stone (and hey, it was like 10 or 15 bucks for two years, so whatever), and i subscribed to them because the wikipeedeeas said spin was rolling stone's main competitor. i come to find out (and this is based on one issue, so forgive my rush to judge) it covers indie rock almost exclusively, to the point where i don't know most of the bands. in some ways, that's good; i've been introduced to alela diane and i really like her music. in other ways, it's kind of dumb; they're reviewing several albums that probably have no staying power whatsoever, yet they praise it generously. i don't know. maybe i'm being too judgmental. i feel i've been that way lately)

okay, I listened to at least one song from each of the albums and each of the links. here are my notes

The strokes: at risk of sounding like a hipster, I like their older stuff better

Alela: beautiful what I could find. I think of the really nice folky rock groups from the sixties, like the mamas and the papas, and dylan... and jenny lewis (also from the sixties, in that her parents probably thought about having a kid in the sixties and didnt get around to it for a couple decades).

My morning jacket: I've only heard some stuff of theirs but the song "circuital" sounds like band of horses, and pretty badass (forgive the lack of insightful adjectives, I'm actually pretty busy right now).

Beastie boys: I've never been a fan. This is the "one day as a lion" pick this time around, maybe it'll grow on me, but I don't expect it to,

Modeselektor: only one I've mentioned so far that I went back and listened to multiple tracks.

Jeff Beck: second one so far I went back to and listened to multiple tracks. "I put a spell on you" was great. The only criticism I have is that, while he knows not to overplay, he sometimes lets everyone else (orchestra, singer, etc.) carry the song. No big deal though.

Talking Heads: I could listen to hours of talking heads. David byrnes voice never changes but the music and lyrics are variety enough.

Henry Nilsson: didnt blow me away, but he's still good.

The Stooges: listened to them at full blast with my headphones on. My ears were the color of the cover of their album.

I'm writing an article for the final assignment of my undergraduate degree. It's on Mayhem. If you get this by tues 6/21 at 3pm, feel free to give any input.

I'm working as a night auditor at the days inn down the street, I quit the henrietta a couple weeks ago, and I'm painting and reading a lot more. I'm not happy but I can feel myself approaching it, which I assume is better than the real thing anyway. I think I'm distilling and distributing my pleasure. My friends are the best group I've ever had, and my alone time is the most productive and various it's been since I lived alone. I'm poor but people are recognizing what I am doing. I had an amazing trip on mushrooms, the epiphany from which has been lasting. I'll tell you about it, late-July-early-August, I guess.

as I'm sure you know, Osama is dead, and it seems like there are two responses.

1. Cheering

2. Condemnation of the cheering of group 1, because he's a human being.

The conversation between the two seems to show that he was never really a human being to at least the people having the conversation. He was a symbol. He represented 9/11 and with him dead, a lot of people seem to be experiencing humon closure.

I keep thinking of when you explained how thin the evidence was that he orchestrated everything. It seems like the evidence now is pretty thin that he's actually gone. In any case, now is the perfect time for a republican senator or outspoken right wing pastor to get caught having gay sex.

I guess I'm kind of bombarding you with information but this one is important. I take shitty care of my brushes because I have a bunch of cheap ones that leave bristles in my paintings and lose their shape really quickly, making it really tricky to put paint exactly where you want it. But if you have a few good ones it's important to take care of them. To do that you should always make sure you clean all of the paint out of them when you're done, dry them and stand them bristle up in a cup or whatever. If paint dries in them they're useless and if they sit on their bristles they can bend and fray. Also a plastic knife or something to mix paint would be better than using your brush. They'll last longer that way. A plastic palette is great. I've had the same one since I started and you can just let the residual paint dry up, build up, and then peel it off to make a collage. I've never done that but I've always thought it'd be cool.

What is the nature of the search? you ask.

Really, it is very simple, at least for a fellow like me; so simple that it is easily overlooked.

The search is what anyone would undertake if he were not sunk in the everydayness of his own life. This morning, for example, I felt as if I had come to myself on a strange island. And what does such a castaway do? Why, he pokes around the neighborhood and he doesn't miss a trick.

To become aware of the possibility of the search is to be onto something. Not to be onto something is to be in despair.

The movies are onto the search, but they screw it up. The search always ends in despair. They like to show a fellow coming to himself in a strange place—but what does he do? He takes up with the local librarian, sets about proving to the local children what a nice fellow he is, and settles down with a vengeance. In two weeks time he is so sunk in everydayness that he might just as well be dead.

What do you seek—God? you ask with a smile.

I hesitate to answer, since all other Americans have settled the matter for themselves and to give such an answer would amount to setting myself a goal which everyone else has reached—and therefore raising a question in which no one has the slightest interest. Who wants to be dead last among one hundred and eighty million Americans? For, as everyone knows, the polls report that 98% of Americans believe in God and the remaining 2% are atheists or agnostics—which leaves not a single percentage point for a seeker. For myself, I enjoy answering polls as much as anyone and take pleasure in giving intelligent replies to all questions.

Truthfully, it is the fear of exposing my own ignorance which constrains me from mentioning the object of my search. For, to begin with, I cannot even answer this, the simplest and most basic of all questions: Am I, in my search, a hundred miles ahead of my fellow Americans or a hundred miles behind them? This is to say: Have 98% of Americans already found what I seek or are they so sunk in everydayness that not even the possibility of a search has occurred to them?

Mill was very sheltered through his childhood and adolescence, and so, when he reached his twenties he had a breakdown, before devoting his life and career to his philosophy. it is rather odd that people say 'question' before asking a question. it almost seems like they're either preparing everyone in the room for it (as we all know questions are the most lethal types of sentences) or being inconsistent, in the sense that before making a regular statement, they don't say 'statement.'

yes, i tend to read large sections of a book in one sitting. usually about 50 pages per book per day (i try to read most days, but often it just doesn't happen). it takes me a while. sometimes i'll devote an entire afternoon to only reading those fifty pages. it depends on the book: how interested i am in it, how dense or thin it appears to be in terms of subject matter and subtext, how long it is.
i don't often read in complete silence unless it's at night. otherwise i'll play music (usually something soft, like piano music), or i'll listen to the news on the radio. what's great about literature is that it's really the only art form that allows the audience to dictate how much time they spend on it. film, theater, and music have a specific time frame. paintings can only be viewed in galleries for certain lengths of time. books are in your hand, and you can say, 'i quite liked that paragraph. i think i'll read it again. and the socialists cannot stop me!'

Do you think there are better ways to do it than the way that you do? Do you ever just read a page? I assume you sit down with a book and read chunks of it at a time.

I don't know what you're talking about with the holocaust bullshit. I would never propagate any message that was at all against Israeli sentiment. But really I don't remember what youre talking about. I read the Now That's What I Call Music entry from the tumblr. That whole letter to persons or entities unlikely to respond is a fun series. The Jonas Brothers mnemonic was funnier than the hawaii one. I think we both know Hawaii has been through a lot.

I think I might start using Facebook to act like a complete moron. I've already started. Once I get the balls I might actually start trolling for serious. Btw, Mr. Marriage Expert, oh that's right, I forgot, you're wife is dead.

And second of -ly, next week I'll be moving into a sweet house downtown.
